London Olympics 2012
The International Olympic Committee has announced that the 2012 Olympic Games will be held in London. It will be the first time the Olympics has been held in Britain since 1948.
London beat favourites Paris by 54 votes to 50 at the IOC meeting in Singapore, after Moscow, New York and Madrid were knocked-out. IOC president Jacques Rogge announced the result at lunchtime on 6th July 2005.
Prime Minister Tony Blair called the win "a momentous day" for Britain.
Shares in British construction companies rocketed and mortgage lenders predict that house prices in the capital would rise.
